I've been reading the commentaries. Several people say that it was a fake tank with a TNT charge inside, exploded by remote control. Is that correct?

It's all an accident, an accident of hands. Mine, others, all without mind, from one extreme to another, but neither works nor will ever. Rolf Steiner

Not so difficult.... it's a top attack missile , litterally piercing the roof of the tank near to perpendicular, which is the weakest part of the tank's armour (only 5 a 10 cm equivalent), while the missile has an appr. 75cm penetration capebility. As the T-72 has it's ammo in a ring shaped magazine, just below the tower, all ammo will be ignited instantaniously.

The propellant will be ignited not the HE charges, means at best the tower will be lifted off as seen on so many T-72.
Vehicles doestroyed as we see in that video are only known from direkt GBU hits.

I agree on a good portion of BS in this video.

    Halo,
if You go to the site: http://www.pyro-csol.cz/

click on: Příběhy a události (in the left window)

then click: Bohosudov 1991 (bottom of the page)

you can read a very interesting article about an explosion of a soviet tank in Czechoslovakia writen by one of few EOD experts who was an eye-witness of the aftermath.

For all other who do not yet read in czech or russian there are pictures too.

On the other hand I wonder if they would load a T-72 on the range (if they even knew how-to), they might use an equivalent load in the crew compartment therefore more easily initiated.

Here's video of another top attack hit (Bill 2) , the propellant ignites http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7isayMwjXOw, but the tank does not disintigrate like the T-72
One of the known weak-points of the T-72 is the Ammo-Loader with all ammunition around the crew, which leads to a catastrophic kill when ignitet - usually by blowing the turret off. Not a new phenomenon: One of the words of german Tiger-crews in WWII: the T-34 "zieht den Hut" ("lifts off the hat"), we just found one in Rostock...

There are quite some discussions about the "fake" http://www.mapleleafup.net/forums/ar...p/t-12645.html
